The Harley® Journey…
“On motorcycles, up the road, they come:
Small, black, as flies hanging in heat, the Boys,
Until the distance throws them forth, their hum
Bulges to thunder held by calf and thigh.
In goggles, donned impersonality,
In gleaming jackets trophied with the dust,
They strap in doubt – by hiding it, robust –
And almost hear a meaning in their noise.”
The words of Thom Gunn echoed through my mind as I walked through the eminent doors of Harley-Davidson® Durban. The sky was clear and a slight breeze hummed through the air. Although everything seemed perfect, the excitement grew, making my nerves shoot through the roof, as I knew today I would be signing my contract to be part of a world renowned brand.
As I geared to proudly scribble down my million dollar signature, I was thrown back to when my love for motorbikes first began. Grade 9. Period 3. English class. We were working on the poem “On the move” (by Thom Gunn). For many who know me, are aware that I am passionate about English literature, and the poem sets forth to change the perspective of one’s mind and perfectly and sympathetically captures the ethos of motorcycle gangs which in turn planted the passionate seed for motorcycles in my heart. So naturally, I jumped at the opportunity to be part of this world.
Being as young as I am, I knew there was a lot to learn about being a MotorClothes® sales consultant. Although that was very daunting, my Momma did not raise a quitter, an annoying over achiever, yes, but not a quitter.
As my journey and career began with Harley-Davidson®, I fell more in love with the authentic expression brought to surface with the design of clothing and gear produced. Being a self-proclaimed fashion maestro, I really felt in my element among the different collections of masterpieces. From loud and proud to minimal. From hard-core butch to dainty lady like. From high performance riding gear with a sense of style to hand stitched details. The fashion sense is bold and daring and this reflects a generation that is not afraid to say what they think, transcending beyond age groups, as fashion is not just a means of clothing your body, it is the essence of your personality and beliefs and the Harley designers are well aware of the power they hold.
I have learned that the trends in Harley® fashion unify women and men around the world, yet still allowing them the ability to portray their own individual style. In my personal experience, it has opened my mind and has grown the passionate seed that was planted 8 years ago. I would like nothing more than to be engulfed by the Harley® world and to inspire other millennials, showing them that you do not have to be 50 to be part of this prestigious brand.
I am honoured to be part of the Harley-Davidson® Durban Team and to be surrounded with beautiful masterpieces of clothing.
